Hst Observations of the Blue Compact Dwarf Sbs 0335–052: a Probable Young Galaxy
We present HST WFPC2 V and I images and GHRS UV spectrophotometry of the spectral regions around Lyα and OI λ1302 of the extremely metal-deficient ( Z ∼ Z⊙/41 ) blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335–052. All the star formation in the BCD occurs in six superstar clusters (SSC) with ages ≤ 3-4 Myr. As there is no evident sign of tidal interaction, star formation in the BCD is probably triggere...
متن کاملEvidence for Accretion in a Nearby, Young Brown Dwarf
We report on the discovery of the young, nearby, brown dwarf 2MASS J0041353−562112. The object has a spectral type of M7.5, it shows Li absorption and signatures of accretion, which implies that it still has a disk and suggests an age below 10Myr. The space motion vector and position on the sky indicate that the brown dwarf is probably a member of the ∼20Myr old Tuc-Hor association, or that it ...
متن کاملThe Dwarf Galaxy Population in Nearby Groups. the Data
We used V and I CCD photometry to search for low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the central (< 0.5 h Mpc) region of the loose groups NGC 6868 (Telescopium) and NGC 5846, the compact group HCG 42 and the poor cluster IC 4765. We used the parameters given by the exponential profile fit (central surface brightness, scale length and limiting diameter) to identify 80 low surfacebrightness dwar...
متن کاملThe Extraordinary Mid-infrared Spectrum of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy Sbs 0335 052
SBS0335-052 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) with one of the lowest known metallicities, Z∼Z⊙/41, making it a local example of how primordial starburst galaxies and their precursors might appear. A spectrum obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope clearly shows silicate absorption features, emission lines of [SIV] and [NeIII], and puts strong upper limits...
متن کاملDeep spectroscopy of the low - metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335 – 052 ⋆
The results of deep long-slit spectroscopy of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335–052 are presented. Down to intensity levels of 10 of Hβ, unprecedented for spectroscopy of extra-galactic giant H ii regions, we detect numerous weak permitted and forbidden nebular lines in the brightest part of the galaxy. With varying degrees of confidence, the detections incl...
